Gold Coin Donation Supports Sioux Empire United Way’s ‘Coins for Kids’ Fundraising Initiative

The Sioux Empire United Way's Coins for Kids fundraising program recently received an extraordinary gift: a $50 American Gold Buffalo Coin, valued at approximately $3,000, from a generous community member who has chosen to remain anonymous. This remarkable contribution will directly benefit the fundraising program dedicated to supporting Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which provides free books to children from birth to age five.

The Coins for Kids fundraiser started back in 1997 and takes place annually through elementary schools in the Sioux Falls School District and surrounding communities, including Tea and Harrisburg. This unique initiative encourages students to collect spare change while learning about philanthropy and the importance of supporting their community and those in need. Over the years, the program has inspired countless young people to understand the power of collective giving and the impact it can have on others' lives.

"We are deeply moved by this generous and unique donation," said Kim Burma, 2025 Campaign Chair for Sioux Empire United Way. "Every dollar raised helps bring the joy of books into homes across the region. This gift will undoubtedly make a lasting impact on the lives of countless children."

Last year, the Coins for Kids program raised just over $29,000 which equates to approximately 13,419 books. The donation of the $50 American Gold Buffalo Coin is a testament to the creative ways community members are stepping up to support their community.

Dr. Jane Stavem, Superintendent of the Sioux Falls School District, shared her thoughts on the district's long-standing partnership with Sioux Empire United Way through the Coins for Kids fundraiser:

"Coins for Kids teaches our students that anyone, regardless of age, can positively impact their community. Change creates ‘change’ and the Coins for Kids program is a shining example of the collective good we can achieve through Sioux Empire United Way."

In addition to the efforts of students and schools, community partners play an essential role in ensuring the program's success. Each year, The First National Bank in Sioux Falls plays a critical role in the Coins for Kids campaign by sorting and counting thousands of coins collected by the schools. Their continued support ensures the success of the program and maximizes its impact.

The funds will go directly to support Sioux Empire United Way’s Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program, which delivers an age-appropriate book to registered children each month at no cost to their families. This program has proven to be a cornerstone in early childhood development and education, laying the foundation for academic success.

Sioux Empire United Way thanks all its donors, especially the students, families, and schools participating in Coins for Kids, for their contributions—both large and small—that keep programs like this thriving.
