We help you help your community.
Join our growing network of enthusiastic volunteers to learn, grow, and make an impact in your community through Sioux Empire United Way's network of supported agencies. We help members better understand the human service needs – providing for children, vulnerable adults, and people in crisis – right here at home.
In 2023, Volunteer United – formally known as Emerging Leaders – made an incredible impact in the Sioux Empire donating over 360 volunteer hours. We hosted solo, hybrid, and group events creating over 16,300 instances of impact. Check out our full impact report here!

This event is hosted by Sioux Falls Community Area Foundation (SFACF). Coordination and communication will be coming from the SFACF team.
The Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation manages a robust scholarship program. Generously established by donors who are passionate about the power of education, our scholarship funds open doors to life-changing opportunities for local students to pursue higher education. In 2024, we disbursed over $500,000 in scholarships, empowering students statewide to continue their academic endeavors, including two-year, four-year, and graduate degree programs.
Our volunteer community – composed of individuals like you who generously share their time – forms the backbone of this program. Your involvement in evaluating scholarship applications truly makes a lasting impact on the lives of these students.
Scholarship Evaluation Timeline:
- Our scholarship application window closes for students on March 15
- You will receive evaluation assignments on or before March 21
- We aim to complete all evaluations by mid-April
To express our gratitude and provide essential information to our 2025 volunteers, we’re organizing a Volunteer Orientation and Appreciation Event at R Wine Bar in Sioux Falls on Tuesday, March 11, from 4:30-6:00PM. All volunteers will receive a confirmation email that includes a link to RSVP to this event soon after completing the registration form. Please note that the confirmation email is not automatically generated and must be manually sent.
Reach Literacy provides tools to help community members (of all ages) enhance their literary skills, language skills, and love of books! Assist Reach Literacy in prepping for their spring sale - where books, tools, and resources are available for the Sioux Empire community to shop!
We will be sorting, organizing, and arranging in preparation for the weekend sale, occurring March 22 and 23.
Please wear close-toed shoes and get ready for a good time!
Come enjoy a pick-up game of basketball with Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire, or quality social time!
Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire provide enriching, safe, and supportive activities to children when they are not at home or at school. Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire works with children ages 4 weeks - 18 and offer numerous programs that support early education, character development, and planning for the future.
Volunteers are invited to play in an after-school pick-up game of basketball with present youths! Please wear close-toed shoes and be ready for a fun, friendly, and casual game. The first 15 minutes will be for introductions and warming up. Some youths might not want to play basketball, in which case volunteers are welcome to hang out, chat, and offer support for day-of programs occurring!
Volunteers are invited to continue socializing after the game, from 5:30-6P, while dinner is served - this is optional, but encouraged if you would like to extend your volunteer time!
Join Volunteer United at St. Francis House to help serve lunch to their guests! Volunteers are an integral component in the operation of St. Francis House where they are moving people from Homelessness to Hope!
Volunteers are expected to arrive at 11:15 a.m., wear close-toed shoes, and tie long hair back. We will lend a hand in preparing and/or serving meals, making sack lunches, preparing late plates, and baking items for guests.
Please email rachael@seuw.org with any questions!
Volunteer United is excited to invite you to the 2025 Day of Action! Join us alongside our locally funded SEUW nonprofit partners to provide practical and tangible solutions to the challenges they may be facing. Whether it’s preparing meals, painting furniture, or serving guests, we look forward to supporting the agencies impacting our community!
Volunteers will be expected to complete hands on projects and agency tours from 2 - 4 pm and are invited to attend the Day of Action Kickoff beforehand. This will be a great opportunity to mingle with SEUW volunteers, board members, staff, and partner agencies.
Individual and volunteer groups will need to register in advance as we will be providing T-shirts for the Day of Action & will be matching volunteers and agencies based on their project preferences.
In 2024, we deployed over 175 volunteers to 20 service projects across 17 nonprofits. We hope you'll join us this year!
Join Volunteer United to support DakotAbilities in their mission to empower people with disabilities. Working together, they help create opportunities and meaningful lives for the people they serve daily!
Volunteers will meet the DakotAbilities crew during a quick tour of the Longfellow Center before sharing their time and talents over coffee, conversation, and bingo!
Join us at Inter-Lakes Community Action Partnership to play with infants and toddlers! Together we'll sing, dance, and read with children ages 0 to 3. Don't forget to bring a smile, a positive attitude, and be ready for cuddles!
Volunteers are asked to wear comfortable, appropriate clothing and shoes (no tank tops or tight fitting clothes). ICAP also requests individuals arrive 5-10 minutes early with their driver's license or photo ID.
Should you not be feeling well the day before or of the event, please send your regrets to rachael@seuw.org.
Join Volunteer United & Meals on Wheels at Active Generations to help package meals for local individuals that are unable to prepare healthy, consistent meals in their homes for medical or social reasons.
Volunteers will serve on a packing line that is very similar to a school cafeteria packing system. Items are scooped into trays and stamped. On average, volunteers pack approximately 580 meals. These meals are then delivered by volunteers and staff to homebound clients throughout the Sioux Empire. Individuals must stand during the packing process but will not be lifting items.
We ask that volunteers wear close-toed shoes, tie up long hair, and be prepared to stand for the whole event. We estimate that there will be a short tour and a 1 hour activity beginning at 9:30 am. Volunteers can park on the west side parking lot and use the entrance facing west. Please line up around 9:20am near the cashier desk which is directly in front of the “Sertoma” room (there is a large sign). This will allow volunteers time to put coats away, put gloves/hair nets on, etc.
