Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Reports To:  Sioux Empire United Way Board Chair

Primary Objective: The CEO will provide strategic vision and leadership to champion an effective and unified response to identify and meet community needs. The CEO will lead a team of staff, Board of Directors (BOD), volunteers, and community stakeholders to support and advance the mission of Sioux Empire United Way (SEUW). In addition, the CEO role will be responsible for effective organizational structure and governance.

The CEO will meet the essential duties and responsibilities of the role. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Develops, implements, and monitors effectiveness of the SEUW strategic plan and ensures engagement of all stakeholders to include staff, BOD, volunteers, and community stakeholders.
  2. Provides a high level of leadership by attracting and retaining high caliber staff. Maintains a  diverse, cohesive, and trusting culture that ensures high levels of engagement, development, and performance of staff, volunteers, and BOD. Engages and promotes teamwork. Provides feedback, coaching and training opportunities on a regular basis.  Influences and creates a climate that fosters personal investment, excellence, and commitment to the goals of SEUW. Supports and pursues continuous learning for staff and self-development. 
  3. Utilizes a relational approach to securing support from donors, volunteers, and corporate partners to meet or exceed major giving, planned giving, and campaign targets. Identifies and implements new funding sources. Directs staff  in planning, organizing, and executing resource development activities. Ensures donor funds are effectively and efficiently allocated to  maximize impact.
  4. Establishes open, trusting, and candid working relationships with all stakeholders to include staff, BOD, and community stakeholders. Treats individuals fairly and with respect. Presents a credible image to the SEUW community served.
  5. Works to bring diverse people together and provides the necessary leadership to mobilize them in the governance and operating divisions achieving United Way objectives.
  6. Ensures effective governance and bylaws are in place to support the mission of the organization. 
  7. Participates in various internal and external committees and professional organizations.
  8. Creates energy and enthusiasm through engagement with all stakeholders.  Gains support and commitment.  Mobilizes individuals and groups to act. Maintains high level of trust and personal integrity.   
  9. Manages financial resources wisely. Provides oversight and transparent reporting to ensure compliance, operational efficiency, and fiscal health of the organization. Understands the development of operating budgets and fiduciary responsibility. Develops and works with staff regarding the monitoring and managing of approved budgets.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, social sciences, business administration, public administration, or related field of study is required.
  • Minimum of 6 years of United Way experience, nonprofit experience, or other closely related experience.
  • Leadership experience to include people management is required.
  • Strong strategic thinking, visioning, and planning skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate managerial courage to motivate and lead a team to meet or exceed performance competencies and the ability to influence staff to adapt to changing expectations and stay focused in an evolving environment. 
  • Ability to speak clearly and express oneself well in groups and in one-on-one conversations as well as written communications; listens and encourages open expression of ideas and opinions.  
  • Strong relationship building and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Possesses a passion for serving people and the impact SEUW provides in supporting and enhancing the lives served through SEUW.
  • Possesses the knowledge and demonstrated ability to select, cultivate and recruit volunteers who are opinion leaders representing all constituencies served in the SEUW community.
  • Exhibits integrity and discretion in handling confidential information.
