CorTrust is Cooking Up Fun

CorTrust Bank and employees set a goal for a 10% increase over the previous year's giving. Several fundraising activities were held in October and resulted in more dollars toward that goal. First a chili cook-off was held for the staff and "Chef Chuck Oster" came away with the title.

Chuck Oster with his award winning chili.

ECMs Trina Lyons and Diane Mulloy also planned a book sale, bake sale and lastly a pumpkin decorating contest, each one a more successful fundraiser than the last. Successful both in the fun had and funds raised. The employees whose pledges were increased 10% were awarded hours of PTO.

As the campaign wrapped up, CorTrust reached a 21% increase over last year's giving. And once again, because there was 100% participation, CorTrust Bank has matched its employees giving.

Sweet Success at Great Western Bank

This year ECM Rhonda Jones put together a committee to help spread the word about United Way and encourage participation. The committee attended training and worked hard to be fun and creative while educating employees about how United Way impacts the community. Goals were set, including pies in the faces of managers when certain participation goals were met. If Great Western Bank had 100% participation, CEO Jeff Erickson, would be among the ranks.

Great Western Bank celebrated a 118.5% increase in giving with an all-employee celebration. There were food and games, results were announced, and the leadership got pied – including Jeff himself!

Ready, set....

Pie!

What a way to show your support of Sioux Empire United Way, great job to the volunteers and the leadership who took a pie in the face.  That's truly a sweet success!

Serving Up Success at Lewis Drug

Lewis Drug served up a competition among it's different locations to start their campaign off.  The winning store would receive a free meal served up by the loosing store managers, as well as a traveling trophy and bragging rights!

The Brandon Lewis Drug & the 57th Lewis Express beat all the other stores with 100% participation and 4 Heart Club members. Their United Way committee members let us in on their secrets of success:  information, taking part in the UW agency tours, personal invitations to their fellow associates and working together. They highly recommend taking part in the agency tours, it helped them get others excited!

All the managers of the other Lewis Drug stores in Sioux Falls helped served the winning store. What a great group of leaders who are not just good sports, but great sports!

successful campaign!

Great job to ECM Marcy Mattern and all of the committee volunteers of Lewis Drug.  What a fun way to thank your staff!

Heating Things Up at Tiger

Tiger Corporation heated things up with their campaign this year, holding their rally on October 31, the day of their annual chili cook-off event. Employees participated in a contest for the best chili, soup, salad and desert with prizes going to the winners.

Tiger Corporation staff all got a chance to attend a rally and learn about Sioux Empire United Way.

ECM Wendy Kerkhove and committee member Carrie Puthoff followed the Six Day Campaign, which proved successful for Tiger Corporation this year. Employing giving increased to 75% and their Heart Club givers more than doubled.

Employee giving increased by over 75%!  Great job Tiger Corporation!

A variety of incentives including vacation days, Dairy Queen Blizzard treats, and lunch with CEO Shawn Cleary motivated the employees to invest with their heart. Employees received treats each day of the campaign, and on the last day each participant received a Thank You for participating.

Food and Fun at Butler Machinery

Food and festivities helped to make the Butler Machinery rally week a success. ECM Sharon Vortherms organized the week of activities for October 22 through 26, with games such as candy jar guess, Bingo and a putting contest.

Staff at Midcontinent Communications had a blast from the past on October 22, going back to the swinging 60s! During their United Way week, staff were encouraged to dress in their favorite 60s gear, competing for a prize. They also got to test their knowledge of the decade with a 60s trivia competition. And finally, they got their groove on with a hula-hoop contest.

Along with the fun and games, staff had the opportunity to attend several different rallies throughout the week. By attending a rally, their name was entered into a drawing. Their name was entered into the drawing additional times by turning in their pledge card and by making a donation with their pledge cards. Prizes included $100 gift card, MP3 player, portable CD/DVD player, a wireless home theatre system, and a snowboard.

Fun Under the Big Top at Wells Fargo Bank

Wells Fargo Bank kicked off their campaign the week of October 8 with plenty of clowning around! Before kicking off their campaign, ECM Larry Young and his team of volunteers used weekly communication to build anticipation and educate the staff about Sioux Empire United Way.

Wells Fargo Bank staff clowning around!

One of their goals this year was to ask everyone and show them the benefits of investing in Sioux Empire United Way. They did this by holding rallies throughout the week at several locations. By holding several rallies, they reached an additional 100 team members this year! Other goals included to increase their participation and Heart Club members by 10%.

Team members who attended a rally joined others under the big top to learn more about United Way, hear from an agency speaker, listen to a personal message from Pam Hanneman, Sioux Empire United Way Board Chair and Wells Fargo Bank staff member, about Heart Club membership. Attendees also were entered into a drawing for ½ days off (Intermission time), Stampede tickets, movie theater gift cards, and a holiday limo package.

All of this clowning around is sure to lead to a successful campaign!

At the end of the rally, ECMs Matt Houcks, Tim Bjordal and Jennifer Anderson announced that this year’s goal is $525,000! Everyone was encouraged to take what they had learned at the rally back to their perspective departments and to encourage one another to consider giving more.

ECMs Matt, Jenn, and Tim announce they will draw one employee at the end of the campaign,
who will get to drive a Mercedes for a month!

Over the next few weeks, the different departments and divisions of Sanford will be holding their own rallies and campaigns. The kickoff was a great start to what we expect will be a great campaign!

Counting on Success!

Eide Bailly kicked off their United Way campaign with an office wide meeting on October 8. Employees heard from Karen Fogas with Youth Enrichment Services, watched the video, and purchased raffle tickets for gift baskets that are valued at $300 each. At the end of their rally, pledge cards were collected and drawings were held for underground parking, Stampede and SD Symphony tickets, as well as a SD Symphony CD. Separate drawings will be held for new Heart Club members for two weeks of underground parking.

Great job to the team of Eide Bailly volunteers who put together a fun time for their staff!

Running Towards Success

The First National Bank in Sioux Falls kicked off their campaign the week of October 1, with a number of different rallies for all of their locations. ECMs Jill Mockler, Erin Fossell, and Brian Larsen put a little competition into their United Way activities this year.

All First National Bank employees were placed on four different teams: Bill’s Screamin’ Eagles, Cal’s Caring Contributors, Dick’s Dynamic Donors, and Jan’s Stewardship Superstars. The teams are competing in three different challenges:

  • Pledge Card Sprint - team with all pledge cards in first will be in a drawing for four ½ days of PTO as well as cash gift cards.

  • Participation High Jump - team with highest percentage of team members participating will be in a drawing for six full days of PTO, and various cash gift cards.

  • Penny War - the winning team will have lunch delivered to them on October 31.

To ensure everyone has a chance to win, an individual challenge will help FNBSF staff Build a Stronger Community. All employees who make a pledge are entered into a drawing for various PTO and cash gift cards.

The penny war was started, during the rally.

All of these challenges have First National Bank in Sioux Falls staff running to their goal of $66,000, and they’re already 90% of the way there. That’s a track record of success!

Family Fun at Avera Heart Hospital

Avera Heart’s campaign kickoff was a family affair, with staff invited to participate in a family fun carnival.  The carnival included a fishing pond and face painting for kids, with bean bag toss and a cake walk for adults.  Everyone who attended received popcorn and candy and drawings were held for various gift cards and prizes.

Wells Fargo Financial held multiple rallies on September 11.  All of their staff were bussed to the rally site where they enjoyed refreshments and learned more about the Sioux Empire United Way.  ECMs Jason Poppens and Jason Woidyla emceed the rally and provided a Strong Start with a game of "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?"

Nick Grant and Kim Bartels were the lucky contestants to test their wits against a 5th grade level quiz.  Could you answer questions like which city is the closest to Phoenix - Pierre, Helena or Salt Lake City?  Here's a hint, it's not Pierre or Helena.

Wells Fargo Financial employees finding out if they are smarter than a 5th grader.

Jewels of the Sioux Empire

Like many local companies and organizations, the Sioux Empire United Way has its own rally to raise money for United Way through employee pledges. ECMs Kristi Kranz and Susan Miskimins held this year’s campaign during the week of August 6 and the theme was the “Jewels of the Sioux Empire” – the jewels being volunteers, agencies, agency clients, and donors. Daily competitions for the staff to be the first to locate a “treasure” brought out the competitive spirit in all. Contestants needed to solve word puzzles and riddles with a United Way or gem theme to locate the hidden treasure before their co-workers.

Above left:  Kacey & Cindy celebrate winning the first prize of the week.
Above right:  Coleen, Chelsea, Jay & Susan try to decode the clues to the final treasure hunt.
