|
Agency: Sioux Falls Area CASA,
Court Appointed Special Advocates Service: Recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers to act as an advocate for abused and/or neglected children in court, promoting and protecting the best interest of the child. Need: Each year there are over 4000 reported cases of child abuse and neglect and over 400 of these cases are substantiated. Impact: CASA changes the destiny of abused and neglected children. Breaking the cycle of child abuse and reducing of the number of children who re-enter foster care because of subsequent abuse. |
Life through the
eyes of the child is often sunny, optimistic, and honest.
But life through the eyes of an abused or neglected child is
much different. The world can seem overwhelming and many
children feel as if they have no one to trust. Over 100 CASA volunteers, Court Appointed Special Advocates, are working to improve the lives of these children. “I consider my time an investment in a child’s life and an investment in the community,” said CASA Volunteer Margie. CASA volunteers spend at least 10 hours a month researching their designated child’s case and reporting their findings. Their work ensures court professionals receive better and more detailed information concerning abused and neglected children in the court system. Their number one priority is always the best interest of the child. “I don’t work for DSS, law enforcement, or the parents. I’m there for the child,” said Margie. Thanks to support from Sioux Empire United Way over 300 children will find a safe, nurturing, and supportive environment this year. And their advocates have changed a life, “I have changed the future of a child and broken the cycle of abuse. It feels good to know that I have improved life for one child, forever.” |
